Colonoscopy of the small intestine
So, I had a camera to look at my small intestine, and let me tell you its uncomfortable. Due to the endometriosis being close to the intestines, it can cause a lot of discomfort when simply going to the toilet, and when having the camera have a look it is...very sore.
My dad passed away from bowel cancer when I was 8 years old, so I was eventually going to have to have a colonoscopy, however, due to the flare up of my endo, it was brought forward. This is because there is a possibility of endo tissue growing onto other organs. Thankfully, at this stage they haven't found any growth. They did also take samples of my intestine to check just as a precaution. I will in a few years have to have another and I think that one will also take a look at my large intestine.
Despite this, endo can cause other illnesses such as IBS. It can make it harder to go to the toilet or the opposite and cause a lot of pain. It is pretty gross and its intimate, but I feel its only to help others. It can be embarrassing when I uncomfortable or have struggles such as constipation. But it shouldn't be awkward. YES, its a private thing that not everyone wants to talk about but it does help. You don't have to go into specific details. Just sharing experiences helps. I think people with endo don't really go into to too much detail regarding their bowel movements which is fair enough but when sharing it with people that also have endo, it can be a huge relief. When it all started happening for me, I thought there was something else wrong. Therefore, made me panic and feel as if my body was failing me. But little did I know, endometriosis is linked with a lot of health issues. Yes it sucks, but its also reassuring knowing that my body is ok. I only learnt this from a number of visits with my gastroenterology doctor. He was amazing and has been so goo throughout this entire process. He realised how severe my pain was and how my irregular and unusual bowel movements were effecting the pain even more.
I do still have an odd day where its tricky, or uncomfortable. But I also have days where I'm almost too regular. The main thing is though, I don't panic anymore. I know its normal, yes its annoying and if you pardon the pun, a pain in the bum, it really does help knowing that I have been checked and my body is ok. Also, my foot is in the door now. I know I can contact my doctor if I have any more concerns.
